Glückstadt – History of the town
„Dat schall glücken und dat mutt glücken, un dann schall se ok Glückstadt heten“ (“We shall have luck and we need to have luck and therefore I name the town Glückstadt [German for ‘Lucky Town’].”) – These were the words of Christian IV, King of Denmark when, against all odds, he founded our lovely town in the unexplored marsh landscape along the Elbe on 22 March 1617.
Lucky us! Today, about 400 years later, the King’s audacious dream turned into a picturesque town whose citizens enjoy living in this historic town amidst the beautiful landscape of the Elbmarschen. And what better opportunity to share our luck than by celebrating our towns anniversary!
